What is CBD?
Back to all articles
CBD is fast becoming the ‘go-to’ food supplement in the UK. With so many different products available, different strengths and types such as isolate and full-spectrum, what dosage to take, how it works and how long it lasts... it can be a bit of a minefield!
So What is CBD?
CBD is a classified as a food supplement and is complelty legal in the UK. It Contains less than 0.2% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) making it safe to use without any pysoactive ‘high’ effects.
Where does CBD Come from?
CBD comes from the Cannabis plant, but it is important to distinguish the different types of Cannabis plants, their content, uses and benefits.
There are two main types of cannabis plants: Hemp and Marijuana. Although these are related and therefore share some similarities in their make-up, they are distinct and different too, specifically to do with their cannabinoid content and ratios.
The are over 100 cannabinoids, the two most commonly known are Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD).
Marijuana contains a wide range of cannabinoids including CBD, however it also contains a lot of THC which is the psychoactive component that makes you feel ‘high’. It is the THC content in Cannabis oil from Marijuana that is absolutely illegal here in the UK (if 0.2% or over).
Hemp on the other hand is very high in CBD but crucially, much lower in THC, hence why we derive our CBD oil from Hemp and not Marijuana. The Hemp strain we use, Futura 75, is particularly low in THC and consistently below 0.2% THC meaning you can consume our VITO CBD products with complete peace of mind that they are completely legal and safe.
An additional benefit of using Hemp is that we can source a Full Spectrum CBD Oil (read more on the difference between Full Spectrum and Isolate CBD Oil) meaning the oil is as close to the natural plant as you can get. This means the consumer gets a wide range of additional cannabinoids including CBDA, CBG, CBGA CBC, CBCA without the THC, as well as terpenes, vitamins, minerals and flavonoids. This is expensive to produce, but we insist on only delivering high quality and legal CBD products to our customers.
What does CBD do?
Both CBD and THC have an effect on the body due to their interaction with the endocannabinoid system. THC acts mainly on the brain and has a psychoactive effect known commonly as the ‘high’. As mentioned above, CBD is completely non-psychoactive, so you won’t get 'high'.
Despite being overlooked or ignored by the medical profession for some time, CBD is finally being taken seriously and is widely accepted as being legal and safe. As a result it is becoming more and more widely available to the general consumer.
What are the benefits of CBD?
There have literally been hundreds of studies carried out around the world to help further the understanding into the benefit of CBD. This long over-due investment into research has increased the evidence base, but it’s a lengthy process and despite clinical trials, governments still don’t want to be associated with promoting cannabis.
So what are the health benefits of CBD? As a law abiding, ethical company we cannot discuss the reported benefits of CBD. Similarly we would love to share with you some of the feedback from our customers, however we are not permitted to because of the classification of CBD.
The MHRA allow CBD to be sold as a food supplement, which is a positive step forward as people report feeling the benefit of CBD . Basically, such is the case with all food supplements, we are not permitted to make any health claims.
So even if we had 1,000 people write to us to tell us that it works for specific health conditions, unfortunately we cannot publish this. However, you only have to go on youtube to find hundreds of videos of people taking CBD oil for all kinds of reasons with varying results.
It’s important to remember that everyone is different, the only way to truly know how CBD might benefit you is to try it for yourself. At VITO CBD we strongly believe in this, that’s why we offer a risk free trial on your first order.
How do I take CBD?
There are various ways to consume CBD, including sublingually via Oil Droppers (under the tongue), orally through swallowing capsules or even through vaping.
The most common way to take CBD is using a oil dropper, putting drops under the tongue. However Vape is also becoming more widely used, especially for people who want a fast onset and maximal absorption. A vape bypasses digestion and goes direct to the bloodstream.
How does CBD work with your body?
CBD works with our endocannabinoid system (a network of receptors in our body) to help support well-being. CBD and other cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system in such a profound way that the system itself was named after the cannabis plant.
This system regulates many of the body’s functions including mood, appetite, sleep, hormones, the immune system and pain. Since we know that CBD acts directly on this system it stands to reason that it impacts on daily bodily functions in some way.
